Versomatic™ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q: I backup my computer frequently. Do I still need Versomatic?
A: Unlike traditional backup software Versomatic archives all changes to your files as they happen in real-time. It is not limited to backup schedules! Every time you change and save a document within any application, Versomatic archives all previous versions for you automatically in the background without you even noticing.

The second advantage is the ease with which previous versions can be retrieved. No need to run backup retrieval software, loading tapes, defining complicated scripts or asking your IT department.

Versomatic is a great addition to any existing backup program. It adds a new layer of protection by saving and archiving all changes to files in real-time, not just yesterday's last version or last week's.

Q: When I try to activate my copy of Versomatic I get a message that says, "Cannot activate, please connect to internet and try again." What can I do?
A: This has been reported with some dial-up connections (modem, DSL or ISDN) when using builds 267 or earlier. The solution is to download and install Versomatic for Windows build 277 or greater. Click here to download the latest Versomatic for Windows release. It is important that you remove the last release, restart, then install the new build and restart again.

Q: Where are my file revisions stored?
A: All file revisions are stored in a central data repository or archive. Files are stored in their original format making them true snapshots in time for auditing purposes. The archive can be on a local or removable hard drive.

Q: Will Versomatic take up a lot of memory or hard disk space?
A: Versomatic is very small and very efficient in the way it uses RAM memory. The space it takes up on disk is entirely dependent on the types of files you edit, their typical sizes and how often they are edited. Administrative overhead is insignificant. In real-world tests, after many months of extended service, using an assortment of word processors, spreadsheets, web editors, desktop publishing, and graphics programs, Versomatic seldom used more than 5% of a typical 100GB hard drive. A small price to pay for the added peace of mind.

Q: Are you compressing the revision files?
A: With today's large average disk sizes we have found no compelling reason to compress files and slow down your computer in the process. Most files types today are already highly compressed by their native applications so there is little to be gained by compressing them again. In many cases, trying to compress files again can actually make them get bigger.

Q: Word 2003 includes a "versions" command. Why should I be interested in Versomatic?
A: Word's "Versions" command saves all versions within one file. If this single file gets deleted, overwritten or corrupted everything is lost. Versomatic saves each individual version separately, radically enhancing its survivability. In addition, Versomatic works with all file types and applications not just Microsoft Word.

Q: How do I manually uninstall Versomatic on Mac OS X?
A: To manually uninstall Versomatic on Mac OS X remove the following files/directories:

/Library/Application Support/Acertant/Versomatic -- delete the entire directory
/Library/LaunchDaemons/VersomaticServer.plist
/Library/PreferencePanes/Versomatic.prefPane
/Library/Preferences/com.acertant.technologies.versomatic.plist
/Application/Versomatic -- delete the entire directory
/~User/Library/Preferences/com.acertant.versomatic.viewer.plist
/~User/Library/Preferences/com.acertant.versomatic.quickmenu.plist
After you remove all these items, restart and you will be able to empty trash, once this is done the system will be completely Versomatic clean, then a fresh install should put everything back together.
